A new musical work featuring a chamber choir and four cantorial soloists based on the description of the prophetic appointment of Isaiah, and the symbolic eating of fire as an act of purification. Inspired by Isaiah 5:24, "Therefore as the tongue of fire devoureth the stubble, and as the chaff is consumed in the flame, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust." Amir Shpilman Composer / Artistic Director Recipient of the Rubin Goldmark Scholarship in Music and the Noah Creshevsky Award in Experimental Music, Shpilman has been a member of the ConTempo ensemble led by Pianist Ursula Oppens. Shpilman is also the founder of the CUNY New Music Festival, which each year brings together composers and performers of innovative music from New York for a series of concerts under a unified theme. Shpilman attended master classes and lessons under the guidance of Brian Ferneyhough, Piereluigi Billone, Rebecca Saunders, Germán Toro-Pérez, Raphaël Cendo and Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf. He also collaborated with a variety of performers and ensembles, such as the International Contemporary Ensemble, MIVOS String Quartet, IKTUS Percussion project and more. In 2012 Shpilman founded Ensemble Moto Perpetuo, a New York based chamber orchestra specializing in contemporary music and collaborative creations. His recent vocal work Darkness premiered in September 2012 by Baritone Leigh Melrose and Pianist Anna Tilboork at the Frankfurt Alte Oper, Germany. His new piece Hedef for seventeen instruments will be premiered by members of Ensemble Intercontemporain and Ensemble Modern under Matthias Pintscher in Heidelberg, Germany, April 2013. Recently, Shpilman developed a particular interest in chaotic forms as they are expressed through musical means. Fascinated by forms that synthesize the inherent multiplicity of music while reflecting back a unified vision or idea, Shpilman aspires to develop the ability to translate the relationship between structure and volatility. He believes that contemporary music serves as a vehicle for meaningful discourse, opening the possibility of viewing the same shape, gesture or subject matter from many different perspectives.

AN ENSEMBLE THAT PERFORMS MUSIC WRITTEN FOR VOICE AND GUITAR From early ages to modern times the combination of wooden string instruments (Orpheus’s lyre, renaissance lutes, baroque guitars, guitar among others) and the human voice has been present in every man’s daily life, and has become one of the most common musical expressions, and vehicles for the humanity to express it’s deepest thoughts and feelings. Internationally recognized artists Angelica de la Riva,Soprano and Nilko Andreas Guarin, Classical Guitar, have performed extensively as soloists worldwide and have decided to join efforts to create this ensemble in order to explore and preserve this ancient, intimate and enchanting, nevertheless, humble chamber music ensemble. Their repertoire ranges from the Elizabethan Era, Classical and Romantic Periods to Contemporary Music. Their diverse programs are sung in English, Spanish, German, Portuguese and French and almost always include works for solo classical guitar. The Duo also commissions new works from emerging composers hoping to preserve the legacy of the format. Since their Carnegie Hall (Weill hall), debut in 2010, DE LA RIVA GUARIN DUO has been performing widely across two continents in halls such as The Strathmore in Bethesda, Jay Pritzker Pavillion at Millenium Park in Chicago as well as concerts in France, Switzerland, Brazil and Colombia, electrifying audiences of new comers for their welcoming and powerful performances as well as enchanting music lovers for their accuracy to style, unusual chemistry and elegant stage presence. Their debut CD is a compilation of pieces by composers from around the world such as F. Schubert, J. Dowland, A. Caldara, F. Mendelsohn, G. Faure as well as pieces inspired by their Iberian and Latin-American ancestry, including Bachianas Brasileiras no. 5 by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-lobos and Spanish songs by Federico Garcia Lorca.

Cartagena de Indias, Colombia
(MAP)

Art Song for Voice and Guitar with Classical Guitarist Nilko Andreas

Guitar From early ages to modern times the combination of wooden string instruments (Orpheus’s lyre, renaissance lutes, baroque guitars, guitar…) and the human voice has been present in every man’s daily life, and it has become one of the most common musical expressions, and vehicles for the humanity to express it’s deepest thoughts and feelings. In our “Journey”, we have discovered and learned to love the pieces we have decided to perform here. We would also like to pay an homage to some of the composers who have inspired us in this search, and exploration, hoping to preserve this ancient, intimate and enchanting, nevertheless, humble chamber music ensemble. The program features selections from the renaissance period to contemporary music including works by: F. Schubert, H. Villa-Lobos, G. Faure, F. Garcia Lorca, F. Mendelsonh, M.Giuliani, J. Dowland and J.S. Bach.
